What Is A Galileo Thermometer

20:46 Edit This 0 Comments »

If you are looking for an extremely modern looking and decorative type of thermometer, then what you need is a Galileo thermometer or sometimes called Galileo or galilei thermometer. This device comes in very attractive colors which make it even more pleasing to look at. The tool got it's name from a famous astronomer, inventor and scientist - Galileo Galilie.

The device's body is comprised of a long thin and narrow tube with water and small colorful balls inside. The balls are not just for the aesthetical value but the balls are used to determine the temperature for each of them have different densities and size. Each of these balls have their own counter weight which is in a form of metal and is usually attached on the bottom. This metal counter weight is the one responsible in making changes in the overall density.

Once the device detects a change in temperature, changes the density of the water inside. So what will happen is - the colorful balls having high densities will sink while the balls with low densities will float.

To give you an example of how to read the temperature using the Galileo thermometer, given that the device has four balls inside and these balls are known to have the following information:

Pink Ball - 60 degrees
Red Ball - 65 degrees
Orange Ball - 70 degrees
Violet Ball - 75 degrees

If the temperature detected is 67 degrees, then the pink and red ball will go down to the bottom because they have low densities and the orange and violet ball will float. To read it, the temperature will then be between 65 - 70 degrees. The only down side in using this device is that it only gives you an estimate as to what the temperature is. You will be comparing this to the other thermometers who can give you the exact temperature in just minutes. But honestly, the estimate given by this device is more than enough for you to gauge if the surrounding is warm or not.

Most people use this device as a decorative item inside the house. This is usually placed inside the bedroom or sometimes in the living room where your guests can easily see it.

An innovation to this kind of device is the floating type. This model was introduced just recently in the market and sold like pancakes because you cannot really resist the attractiveness it gives and how nice it would look like in your home. It can also give you the readings in Celsius and Fahrenheit. This model is usually made of cylindrical glass tube with a disc that replaced the traditional balls. It is quite handy for the entire device only weighs 3.7 pounds and only measures around seven inches by seven inches approximately. So if you want to glam up your space whether your home rooms like the living area, bedroom, patio and so on...you can also use this and place it on top of your office desk or anywhere in your receiving area.

What Is a Fridge Thermometer

20:45 Edit This 0 Comments »

Temperature is the most important and essential thing associated with the fridges. The first thing which comes in mind with fridges is temperature. It is highly important to control the internal cooling temperature of a fridge. And for that one need a highly accurate measurement of temperature. Because if you can't control the temperature you may have to lose your food articles at home and at commercial level you may lose your customers and therefore money. In the summer season, it becomes more important. Due to intense heat outside, temperature inside the fridge also increases. To keep it to an optimum level one needs a measurement at regular intervals.

So, how one can monitor and manage the fridge's temperature?

Monitoring of the fridge's temperature can be done easily by a fridge thermometer. This can be defined simply as: "A scale or device that is used for the measurement of the internal temperature of a fridge". By monitoring the temperature one can make necessary adjustments to fridge according to his requirements.

These thermometers have their role in homes as well as in industry and at commercial level. At home, These are very useful because they can help to keep the food items fresh. At commercial level their importance is even much more. Usually display fridges are used at commercial level and their doors are opened again and again, so it becomes more difficult to maintain their temperature. To accomplish this, more advance and accurate This thermometers are used.
These thermometers are basically of two types.

Analog Fridge Thermometers

Digital Fridge Thermometer

Both the options are good and any one of these can be used. So it is up to the user that which option he likes. Some people prefer the traditional methods while others may give priority to some advance techniques.

Analog thermometers are usually connected directly to the thermostat of a fridge. They mostly have a simple dial that can be used to set the temperature. Temperature can be set to a desired level by just turning the dial to specific voltage level.

Digital thermometers are more sophisticated and modern thermometers. They have an electronic display and an electronic control panel. Temperature measurement is quite easy and convenient because you can simply check the temperature from electronic display screen. Different electronic buttons are used to set the temperature to optimum level. Most of the people prefer digital fridge thermometers because of the convenience they provide, and also because of their modern and attracting features.

With the technological advancements, modern thermometers with advance features and more precise measurement are readily available in the market. Beer and Soda Fridge Thermometers, Wireless Fridge Thermometer and Wine Fridge Thermometer are few of them.

Thermometers should always be used according to their specifications. One thermometer can not be suitable for different fridges. Lots of The thermometers are available in the market but it should always be chosen carefully. Some thermometers may not bear the extreme low temperature and thus can be damaged. And mercury inside these thermometers can make your food articles poisonous. So some great care is required while purchasing a Fridge Thermometer.

What Everyone Ought to Know About Government Assistance for Solar Power

20:44 Edit This 0 Comments »

Setting up your own solar power generating unit may not be a very cheap option for you. However, it is a great option for the environment. By using solar power you are reducing the pollution that you are producing as well as reducing your carbon footprint. Thus solar helps improve the environment that we live in. This is one of the reasons why governments provide assistance to reduce the cost of solar use.

Why governments benefit from reducing the cost of solar power

There are several countries and states on Earth where power is generated mainly from non-renewable sources such as the burning of fossil fuels. This creates a lot of pollution and harms the environment in a big way. Thus governments are working to reduce this pollution. One of the most effective and cheapest ways to reduce this pollution is to encourage consumers to set up their own renewable power production units by reducing the cost of solar. This takes demand for electricity off the grid and the government has to burn less of the fossil fuels. Along with that if the people start selling the electricity produced back to the government; the need for the burning of fossil fuels reduces even further.

How the government provides assistance to consumers

Governments may provide assistance to the people who are keen in installing solar panels both financially and non-financially. Financial assistance could be in the form of a grant or subsidy that would help the person to set up the solar panel with the minimum initial investment thus reducing the cost of solar power. Along with this the government may also cover the cost of the linking up of the panel to the grid which would save the people a lot of expenditure and would enable them to sell the electricity back to the grid. To help set up the power unit the government may also provide a discount on the components of the solar system such as panels and installation equipment such as rails. All of these methods help in bringing down the cost of solar substantially for consumers.

The government may also provide non-financial benefits to the people which can be in several forms. It may help to reduce the cost of solar power by providing consultation services to those interested at no fee. The consultants would help bring the cost of solar power down substantially for the individual interested families.

Not all governments provide assistance for solar power

Although most governments have incentives to help reduce the cost of solar power for individual households, there are also some governments that would not find this useful. The reason for this is that some governments produce all of their electricity from renewable sources such as from geothermal energy, wind power and solar power. Thus these governments would not be especially keen on getting solar panels installed in individual homes. However, if there is a shortage of electrical power in the area, the government may still assist the people in bringing down the cost of solar power which would help the households without affordable power and high electrical bills.

Thermistor Thermometer Reliable Temperature Measuring Tool

20:43 Edit This 0 Comments »

A Thermistor thermometer is referred to as a semi conductor device that has electrical resistance and found to be proportional to temperature. Basically the word Thermistor formed with the combination of two words named as 'resistor' and 'thermal'. These are known to be the type of resistor with electrical resistance carrying positive or negative temperature resistance which decreases by 3% per degree Celsius.

Basically there are two kinds of thermistors which are referred to as PTC means Positive Temperature Coefficient of Resistance and NTC meaning Negative Temperature Coefficient of Resistance. NTC are the forms which have inverse relation with temperature and resistance of the object which means that when there is an increase in the temperature of the object there will be a proportional decrease in the resistivity too. Simultaneously if there is a decrease in temperature the resistant level will have an increase.

Whereas the PTC are concerned they witness the same change in the temperature and resistance which means that when there is an increase in the temperature the resistance will also get increase and when there is a fall in temperature reading of the object the resistivity too will decrease.

It's Incredible Uses:

• The thermistors are widely used these days in numerous medical, applications. It is appropriately used in clinical stethoscopes or by way of probes at the time of surgery as well as in various medical units to avoid overheating in circuits, such as X-Ray and ECG machines, MRI Scanners, Blood dialysis equipment Infant incubators, etc.

• We may find their effective usage in home gadgets like cell phones, computers, amplifiers, cars, Air conditioners, Clothes dryers, Dishwashers, Electric water heaters, Fire detectors, Home weather stations, Oven temperature control, Refrigerator and freezer temperature Control, Toasters, Washing machines.

• Whereas industrial applications are concerned it has a main role to play in gadgets like Fluid flow measurement, HVAC equipment, Photographic processing equipment, Plastic laminating equipment, Water purification equipment, Welding equipment, Gas flow indicators, vending machines, Aircraft temperature, Missiles and spacecraft temperature, Satellites, etc.

Most popular model in this category is manufactured by Barnant which offers you with incredible specifications as temperature measuring range from 32 to 122??F or 0 to 50??C, large dual display, overrange, underrange, and low-battery indications, Open sensor, DT function to display the differential temperature relating to current plus assessed one, memory storage function up to 99 temperature readings, recall option, automatic or manual field calibration, Splash or shatterproof resistant and with 1/4" probe with plug connector.

Thermistor thermometer is compact, durable, reasonable and user-friendly device that can be used to measure the precise temperature of food, human being, animals, industrial gadgets, etc. These are found to be more instant and accurate as compared to the traditional or analog ones. Few steps on how to use this device:

• The first thing that you need to undertake is switch on the measuring unit.

• After that check the temperature reading status of the unit means it should be on zero level. In case it is not set it down by pressing the reset button on the device.

• Once you are done with this, hold the probe of the unit and make it to contact directly with object or subject you desire to measure. However in case of food you need to insert the probe nearly half inch deep into it and that too once you are finished with the cooking process.

• Later on wait for seconds till you hear a beep sound.

• Then remove the unit out of the measured object or subject and check the temperature reading over the display screen of the gadget.

The Generator Explained

20:41 Edit This 0 Comments »

Producing energy, such as electricity is essential in our fast-paced and rapidly changing world. We now run more electrical devices than ever, from TVs, to computers, to telephones, servers and many more. But while we can often rely on our electrical output at home and at work, it can be very difficult to get energy outside, especially if you are far from a city, and it can be even harder to restore electricity to a building.

However, generators can fantastic inventions that are able to create mechanical energy into electrical energy, which basically means that they can produce electricity. While many people are probably used to seeing generators at outdoor events, such as music festivals like T in the Park, Glastonbury and Bestival, they are also a common site at other outdoor events that require extra power, such as at weddings, to power the band and lighting in external extensions, like a wedding marquee.

But how does it do it? Well, to put it simply, an electric generator is a device or piece of equipment that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. To do this, the generator uses electrons, and forces them to flow through an electrical circuit, which is usually external, our outside the generator itself. The mechanical energy that creates the electrical energy is usually created by an internal energy inside the generator, be it an internal combustion engine, a wind turbine, compressed air, or even a hand crank that has to be manually turned by a person in order to generate mechanical power.

A generator is made up of several parts, both mechanical and electrical. The mechanical parts of the generator are known as the rotor and the stator; the rotor is, as the name suggestions, the rotating part, and the stator is the still or stationary part of the device. The electrical parts of the generator are the armature, which is the component that produces electricity, and can be found either on the rotor or the stator, and the field, which is a magnetic field that can be created by either electromagnets or other, permanent magnets that can be found on either the rotor or the stator.

While this is the basic structure of many electric generators, dome use what's known as field coils, and not permanent magnets, but the field coils need to be powered in order for them to work. If they aren't powered, the device will not work properly, and this will lead to the rotor in the generator spinning without producing electricity, which means that it will be spinning for no reason, so always make sure that the field coils are powered. However, some smaller generators are known as 'self-excited' generators', which means that the aforementioned field coils are powered by the current produced by the generator, and the field coils are connected with the armature wiring.

So, that was a very brief explanation of what a generator is and how it works, and know you know the very basics of a generator, you can always find a little bit more out about them, or even look into generator hire later on if you so wish.

Should You Install an Axial Fan or a Centrifugal Fan

20:40 Edit This 0 Comments »

An axial fan is one in which the extracted air is forced to move parallel to the shaft about which the blades rotate. Most domestic wall fans use an axial impellar and are ideal for bathrooms, toilets and smaller rooms where the air is to be ducted straight through the wall or installed in a window.

Axial fans are not good for long duct runs. Anything over 5m will seriously impair their ability to extract air because of the larger air pressures present in the duct. When installing an axial type one should also avoid bending the duct if possible as this will also add to the pressure in the duct. In these situations one should use a centrifugal fan.

Centrifugal fans extract air at right angles to the intake of the fan, and spin the air outwards to the outlet by deflection and centrifugal force. The impeller rotates, causing air to enter the fan near the shaft and move perpendicularly from the shaft to the opening in the fan casing.

A centrifugal fan produces more pressure for a given air volume, and is used in installations where duct run is over 5 metres. Indeed, such is their efficiency that some centrifugal fans, such as the Vent Axia Solo can be used in a duct run up to 50m!

Centrifugal fans come in two main types: As an Inline duct fan or as a wall mounted fan. The wall mounted centrifugal fan looks just like a standard axial fan. Since the impellar is hidden by the front grille and casing it can be hard to differentiate the two but the price will usually give it away: Centrifugal wall fans are usually more expensive than axial fans.

Wall mounted centrifugal fans are often see in rooms which do not have exterior walls. Such rooms do not have windows or any natural ventilation and these circumstances usually require a long duct run to reach the outside of the building. The most common problem when air is not being extracted properly is when an axial fan is installed in this type of room... They are simply not designed for this operation.

Inline extractor fans, as the name suggests are situated in the length of ducting. They therefore look completely different from wall fans but most importantly are not installed in the room from which they are extracting air. Ducting will run from one end of the fan to a ceiling grille in the extraction zone and from the exhaust end of the fan to the outside grille. Inline fans are excellent for use above bathrooms or kitchens where extra extraction power is required.

Replacing A Switch Or An Outlet

20:39 Edit This 0 Comments »

In this article I'm going to go over basic replacement procedures of outlets and switches.

Always begin any electrical procedure by shutting the breaker off and testing the project with a multitester to confirm that no power is present. On a modern basic light switch there are three wires. One wire is the line wire that comes from the breaker box. Another wire is the load wire that goes to the light fixture or possibly an outlet that is to be controlled by the switch. The third is simply a ground wire that is connected to the side of the switch with a green screw.

The most common reason for replacement of a switch is that it fails to make sufficient contact internally to turn on the lights. Another reason would be an impact to the switch resulting in a break to the toggle or surrounding area. To replace the switch, turn off the breaker and remove the switch plate. Remove the retaining screws and pull the switch forward and remove the wires. Reverse the procedure with your new switch and turn on the power.

An outlet that needs to be replaced is usually a result of an impact. Outlets in open, high traffic areas often suffer regular abuse, particularly in public places where sweepers or buffers are being used. Outlets that provide power to high amperage appliances such as microwaves will occasionally need to be replaced as the internal contacts become less reliable due to overheating.

Basic outlets generally have five wires unless the outlet in question happens to be the last one on the circuit. Aside from the green ground, there will be a black and white wire feeding the top or bottom of the outlet and another white and black leaving the outlet providing power to the next outlet in the circuit.

When you replace an outlet, check to see if the outlet is fifteen or twenty amps and replace it with the same. If you aren't sure just take it to the hardware store and get some help choosing your new outlet. Replacing an outlet is just like replacing a switch. Turn the breaker off and verify the power is off with a multimeter. Remove the cover plate and the retaining screws and pull the outlet from the box and then the wires from the outlet. Reverse the procedure to reinstall your new outlet.

I hope this has given you some insight regarding switches and outlets. Remember that in any home repair project that safety is the most important aspect. Consult a professional if you ever have doubts about your ability to complete a task.

Power Surge Protection - Do You Need It

20:38 Edit This 0 Comments »

How many of us have waited until our computer, television, or other electrical apparatus was zapped by a rogue current and it resulted in replacement or repair due to an electrical surge? If you were like many, you probably have a personal story to share with an audience that involved having just purchased a new computer or television, and not long after, it was affected by a power surge from an electrical storm rendering the unit virtually useless, and perhaps lost data. Needless to say it prompted you shortly thereafter to run to the nearest vendor and invest in a power surge protection unit.

Let's talk about a power surge protector and what it exactly does for your electronic components. First of all, please don't confuse the ubiquitous power strip with multiple outlet connections fulfilling the same role for protection...they are merely an extension cord with multiple outlets, nothing more, and offer no protection whatsoever against any type of hazardous electrical surge, induced or accidental. A power surge protector is designed to purposely protect your equipment from exposure to any random and uncontrollable electrical power surge by ensuring the current being supplied to the unit does not exceed the recommended voltage rating. Should an inadvertent or accidental power surge occur, the unit will protect all connecting equipment from being permanently damaged and disabled by discharging the rogue current into the ground connection at the outlet. Many contain a built in or replaceable fuse for additional protection.

The item is available in many designs, sizes, and prices ranging from as low as $15 up to $995. You'll want to buy the best protection you can afford, after all, how many of us can afford to replace all our components? Many surge protection units such as APC, Monster, Phillips, and Belkin come with a connected equipment warranty ranging from $100,000 or more, to cover full replacement costs for all connected components in the event the unit ever fails due to a random power surge. The key word here is "connected"...the protection is of no value to the intended component if you're not plugged into the surge protector unit. Some automatically disconnect power to all components and emit an alarm or have an indicator light to warn the individual of a transpired surge.

Nearly all power surge protectors provide secured connections for phone lines, Ethernet, coaxial (internet) cables, modems, and power cords. It is strongly recommended that you connect all cables and power cords to the unit for providing full maximum protection.

You may want to consider purchasing a battery backup surge protector to safeguard your computer against potential loss of data during a momentary loss of power as a result of an electrical storm or accidental power outage. The unit will ensure your computer has an uninterrupted power supply (from the battery) and permit you to safely power down while saving your data. It will hold its charge from 10 minutes to an hour, depending upon the unit features and costs. All peripherals (printers, backup storage, etc.) should be connected to avoid any potential damage and provide full protection.

Pay a little more now or a lot more later...we have a choice. Let's hope we choose wisely by making ourselves less vulnerable and invest in full equipment protection.

Locating A TV Repair Shop

20:37 Edit This 0 Comments »

Let's say you're in the middle of watching your all time favorite TV show, with perfectly cooked Hot Pocket in hand and then the unthinkable happens; your TV stops working for some unknown reason. After cursing the vengeance of the Gods, what are you to do? You intelligently recall that your TV channels over 30000 Volts at one time or another, so you opt to find a TV repair service. Now what?

Using the provided services from Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Sony and Philips:

Well, you are in luck. Most major TV manufacturers have service centers both online and in their stores. For example, Panasonic's Support can be found on the Panasonic website. It is very useful to have your TV's model number, which can usually be found in the manual if you are lucky enough to have kept it, or somewhere on the TV, probably near the company logo or on the back by the electronics. Oftentimes, it will be written on a sticker which contains a vast amount of other important information. Sony also offers a similar service to that of Panasonic on their support website.

The flip side of that coin is for companies like Mitsubishi TV, Panasonic TV and Philips TV. Instead of offering their own service center, they make public various repair techniques on websites such as eserviceinfo.com. Again, knowing your television's model number is a great help in discovering what you need to do.

When it comes to finding a TV repairman of your own, keep in mind that you will want to pay an actual, trained professional. Your neighbor's son's cousin might be really good with electronics, but unless he's certified and insured through your TV's company and/or warranty, he will not be obligated to buy you a new TV when yours inadvertently bursts into flames. We recommend starting with the good old-fashioned yellow pages, or at least the internet counterpart website of yellow pages. Also, to make certain you come in contact with a reputable repairman, Angie's List However, Angie's List does charge for access to its user-based information and recommendations.

Things to remember:

When getting your television fixed, it's important to remember that sometimes, a professional is required. When choosing the right TV repair professional for you, make sure that they are certified, and that their service is within the parameters of compliance set in your TV's warranty. If you're outside the warranty time frame, just ensure that they are endorsed through the company which made your TV in the first place.

Is Your Home Electrical System Safely Grounded

20:36 Edit This 0 Comments »

Back before the days when parents "baby-proofed" their homes, my wife's little sister got quite a shock. Little sister was the mischievous type and stuck her finger into an electrical outlet. It's not actually a very easy thing to do, but at three-years-old, her fingers were small. Fortunately, no lasting damage was done. But my wife will never forget her little sister's blackened finger and the stern warnings by her parents that those mysterious little holes in the wall can kill you.

Now that my wife has married an electrician, she insists that I take every possible measure to ensure that the electrical system of our Los Angeles home is safe. One important step was to ensure that its wiring is properly grounded.

What is electrical grounding, anyway?

Grounding adds a safety factor for your family and your electronics. Here's how it works. Electricity travels the path of least resistance. If an appliance like a toaster breaks, electricity can flow on the metal outside of the toaster. Touching it could result in a serious shock, causing injury or even death. But if the electrical system is grounded and the toaster is plugged in with three prongs, the electricity won't flow to the outside of the toaster. Instead it will flow through the third prong back into the wires and harmlessly into Mother Earth. Thus, the term "grounding."

An electrical system can be grounded with various types of devices. A "ground wire" is simply a wire attached to your electrical system that's been pushed securely into the ground. Metal pipes (electricians call them "conduit") that hold and protect your electrical wires can also act as a grounding device. Sometimes, grounding is provided by running a wire from your electrical system and attaching it to metal plumbing pipes that run into the ground.

Grounding protects not only people but also sensitive electronics. Without grounding, electrical charges build up in wiring and create slight but continuous damage to delicate electronics. This damage can shorten the lives of computers, phones, and any electrical appliance that has "smart" (computer) components, possibly your fridge or dryer.

How can I tell if my electrical system is grounded?

Homes built before 1950 were sometimes grounded. Homes built after 1950 were usually grounded. Even if your system was originally grounded, wiring mistakes may have rendered the grounding ineffective. Even with outlets that accept three prongs, it doesn't necessarily mean that your electrical wiring is grounded. The only way to know for sure is to have a qualified electrician check out your electrical system with a special tester.

My electrical outlets have three prongs -- aren't they grounded?

If your home has electrical outlets which accept three prongs, it MAY have a grounded system. The third prong allows an appliance to be grounded IF it's plugged into an electrical system that has a grounding device. Sometimes three-pronged outlets have been installed in electrical systems that has no grounding device. This can make it look like the system is grounded when it's not. Do-it-yourselfers or handymen may install three-pronged outlets in an ungrounded system not realizing the hazard and not knowing that it violates the National Electrical Code.

Sleep sounder with a grounded electrical system

If you'll sleep sounder knowing that your family and your appliances and electronics are safer, ask an electrician to use a tester to check your electrical system for grounding. This can be done in a service call. In some cases, electricians will offer a grounding check as part of a free home safety inspection, particularly if they're doing other work in your home.

Home Wiring

20:35 Edit This 0 Comments »

Home electrical wiring is something most homeowners can do by themselves. There are certain areas that restrict non-licensed contractors from doing their own work, but most areas allow homeowners to do home electrical installations.

All wiring projects have to be approved by Electrical inspectors and this is a good thing even though it can be a pain initially. Inspectors make sure the circuits are done right and always within code guidelines.

A homeowner can do his or her own electrical home wiring completely for about one-fourth the cost of hiring a professional. This appeals to many people who are trying to build their homes within a tight budget.

Residential wiring consists of several wiring projects. There are the simple 120-volt circuits for lights and outlets that use 12-gauge cable. There are the 240-volt circuits for appliances and HVAC systems that use different sizes of cable and breakers according to their needs. There are also the low voltage circuits like phone lines, computer networks, and security systems that use network cable called CAT-5 cable.

Electrical diagrams are really important to look at when trying to understand how any of the home circuitry is supposed to be installed. There are many rules, regulations, and codes that need to be observed, but it isn't rocket science and most homeowners are up to the challenge.

Electrical wiring systems are like all other projects in home construction where the owner can save thousands of dollars by doing all the labor. All he or she needs is a little know-how and the projects can be done correctly and inexpensively.

There are different voltage levels for different components in a house. For example, a phone or doorbell system would be considered low voltage because they use around twenty-volts with really low current.

Lights and outlets require 120-volts with up to 20-amps of current. The bigger electrical circuits require heavier cable. They usually require 240-volts with up to 50-amps of current.

The electrical circuits need to be planned out well in advance when the blueprints are being drawn up. I prefer to have about 40 copies of the floor plans in a notebook. I draw each electrical circuit on its own page of floor plans. This helps keep the circuits separate in my mind. The electrical blueprints can be very confusing especially if you don't know how to read blueprint symbols.

The important thing about electrical home wiring projects is safety. Always make sure that all breakers are shut off. There is never any reason to work on energized circuits. With a knowledge of how the electrical circuits work in a home, you can be safe.

Electricians - What Their Work Includes

20:33 Edit This 0 Comments »

Electricians do a variety of work in the home and in commercial premises to ensure the electrical installation operates efficiently and to the correct building regulations. Electricians also operate to the right British Standards.

Testing & Certification

Electricians must make sure that electrical installations are safe in the home or commercial premises. Electrical testing should be completed by a qualified electrician at specified periods and is dependant on the type of property being tested. Electricians will check for any deterioration and also on any new work, which is required to bring the installation up to current standards.

Electricians should test and certify electrical work in accordance with the British Standard BS7671. As with any British Standard BS7671:2001 is being always updated to ensure the electrical safety of your property. Electricians will also inform you of any other British Standards which are applicable to your electrical installation. Work carried out by electricians should only be done in accordance with the appropriate regulations.

Electricians are continually trained on the latest regulations which impact on both domestic and commercial properties. Various training centres are available throughout the UK to support electricians with new regulations for testing and certification and other electrical requirements. Certificates provided by the electricians will be from one of the awarding bodies such as the NICEIC, ECA, Elecsa, Napit or Select depending on the electricians choice.

Rewires & Wiring

Many home owners take electricity for granted. With older properties the wiring may need to be replaced by a competent electrician. It is easy to forget over time the cabling in a property becomes outdated and for safety reasons will need to be replaced. So electricians do rewiring predominantly for safety reasons because old wiring can cause fires and electrical shocks. Here are some reasons why you may need a rewire:

  • You currently have switches in the bathroom

DC Inverter Basics

Car power inverters provide you the ability to take the DC voltage from your automobile or other DC battery and transform it into usable AC voltage for household items. The possibilities are nearly endless simply by plugging the inverter into a DC plug (cigarette lighter port) on your car's dash. Whether you are building a fence away from the house and you need a power source for the compressor that runs your nail gun or you would like to power a flatscreen TV and DVD player while you are camping, you have the means to do so.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind however when using a DC inverter. It needs to be properly sized for the device you plan to use. For instance, a 1000 watt hair dryer is simply not going to run on a 100 watt inverter. There are various charts around the web that will give you an idea of how much wattage you will need to run various devices. Something else you will want to keep in mind is anytime you are drawing power from your automobile's battery, you will need to monitor your battery's charge. If you take too much power from your battery without running your engine to recharge it, you may end up having to get someone to give you a start with jumper cables.

DC inverters are also commonly used in solar power systems. The battery which powers the system is kept charged by one or more solar panels (or a windmill) and kept from being overcharged by a charge controller. The inverter takes the power from the battery and sends it to power outlets and lighting. Sometimes these systems are sold in kits.

This gives one the ability to be totally "off the grid". This is a great solution for remote cabins, backyard sheds, or homes that have important devices or appliances that need supplementation in the event of a power outage. In these situations, thought and research will need to go into the capacity of the battery or batteries, the output of the solar panels and the wattage of the inverters. Systems can be designed to power a single remote light all night or to completely power an entire home.

I hope this has given you some ideas on the possibilities a DC inverter can provide. Remember to properly size it for your device and keep your batteries charged and you can have AC voltage whenever you need it.
